Mexico City, Newsstand Vendors Prohibit Porn Near Schools

MEXICO CITY — Though previously the capital has regulated the newsstand sale of pornographic magazines, Mexico City officials say there has been only half-hearted compliance with its regulations.

On Monday, the Mexico City government and newspaper vendors guild agreed to implement a new initiative that prohibits magazine sellers from displaying pornography on stands located near schools. At a press conference, Public Security Secretary Joel Ortega Cuevas said the move comes after a series of complaints by parents who are concerned for their children.

Ortega said the initiative will be enforced by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) especially in cases where stands are illegally selling pirated material.

Since 1997, local regulation has required pornographic material be sold in an enclosed cover with a warning label specifying the content is strictly for adults who are at least 18 years old.

However, officials said it was still too easy to come across rows of market stands selling pornographic magazines and videos, and in some cases, videos shown on television sets in the public way.

According to local government figures, there are more than 7,000 magazine stands in Mexico City.
